Requirements for working in education
Working in the Norwegian education system requires a good knowledge of the Norwegian language. In the Sami (Lapland) region in northern-Norway, a good knowledge of the Sami language (samisk) is required to work in some schools.
Note that there are some English speaking programs and tuitions at university and university college level. Se www.studyinnorway.no for study programs in English.
Important
- Teacher, Primary/Lower and Upper Secondary School, and/or Native Language Teacher is a regulated profession in Norway and you must obtain a recognition from Norwegian authorities in order to obtain a permanent teaching position in Norwegian primary and secondary school.
- To work as head of kindergarten or educational supervisor in kindergarten, you need to have kindergarten teacher’s education or similar education within kindergarten/pre-school pedagogy and management in kindergarten. If your education is from outside of Norway, you need a recognition as head of kindergarten/educational supervisor to obtain a permanent position.
Language teachers are mostly needed in the lower and upper secondary school, and in Universities. The jobs are often part-time in lower and upper secondary schools and can be down to only a 20% position. So you might consider having to take jobs in several schools to get a full time job. And quite often, a (language) teacher in lower or upper secondary school might be required to teach other disciplines as well (sports, maths, etc).
