Sykehuset Telemark (Telemark Hospital Trust) is a major acute hospital organization in the county of Telemark, Norway. It provides diagnostics, treatment, and specialist healthcare services across most medical areas to a population of around 170 000 people. The hospital trust is owned by the regional health authority Helse Sør-Øst and employs about 4 300 staff. Its headquarters and main administrative offices are located in Skien, with additional sites in Porsgrunn, Notodden, Kragerø and Rjukan. Sykehuset Telemark offers a broad range of acute and planned care services, including somatic and psychiatric care, and holds regional responsibilities in specialties such as plastic surgery, medical genetics, fertility treatment, and occupational medicine. The hospital's mission is to deliver high-quality, equitable healthcare to patients when they need it, while also contributing to research, education, and community health.
Sykehuset Telemark is located in a highly accessible and well-connected area, making it convenient for patients, visitors, and staff. Its proximity to major transport routes and public transit ensures easy access from across the region, while the surrounding natural environment creates a calm and supportive atmosphere that contributes positively to patient well-being and recovery.
Telemark is known for its striking combination of fjords and mountains, offering some of the most diverse natural landscapes in Norway. Deep, scenic fjords stretch inland from the coast, creating dramatic contrasts between water and steep hillsides, while the inland areas rise into rolling highlands and rugged mountain terrain. The region includes parts of Hardangervidda, providing vast open plateaus, hiking opportunities, and a strong sense of wilderness. Together, the fjords and mountains make Telemark an area of exceptional natural beauty and outdoor experiences year-round.
In general, while Norway's national median home price is a few million kroner, many areas in Telemark remain more budget-friendly, offering good value for those interested in a balance between quality of life and property cost.
